What is a canopy garage door?
A canopy garage door is a UK up-and-over design where the springs sit on the head of the frame, so roughly a third of the door tips forward over the driveway when open. Canopy gear suits openings up to about 2438mm wide and is harder to automate than retractable gear.
How canopy gear works
The spring mechanism on a canopy door is fixed across the top of the frame rather than down each side. When the door opens, the bottom section swings up and out before the whole leaf slides back under the ceiling, so part of the door projects forward over the driveway for a moment. This makes canopy gear simple and cheap, but it caps the practical width and puts more strain on a retrofit operator than retractable gear does.
Canopy vs retractable at a glance
Canopy gear is standard on narrower single-garage openings and is the cheaper of the two mechanisms to buy and fit. Retractable gear, with springs down both sides, is used on wider single doors and is compulsory on doubles because a canopy mechanism cannot safely span that width.
