How much does a double garage door cost in the UK?
A UK double garage door typically costs 40–80% more than the equivalent single door — so an electric sectional double runs roughly £3,500–£6,300 inc. VAT, based on the single-door reference figure of £2,495–£3,500. Double up-and-over doors must use retractable gear, as canopy gear cannot span the width.
A double garage opening can be treated two ways: one wide door spanning both bays, or two single doors side by side. Both are common in the UK and the cost difference is not what most people assume.
One double door or two single doors?
A double garage opening in the UK can be fitted with either one door spanning the full width, or two independent single doors side by side with a central pier between them. Two single doors let you open only the side you need and are often cheaper in total than one wide sectional or roller door, but they need a structural central pier, which not every double garage has. One wide door gives a cleaner look and full-width access for a single vehicle or larger items, but is the more expensive route for sectional and roller types.
Why the uplift is a range, not a fixed figure
We do not publish a single fixed reference price for double doors because the uplift genuinely depends on door type and gear. Roller and sectional doors scale up fairly predictably with width — a bigger curtain or panel, a stronger motor, reinforced tracking — landing them toward the lower end of the 40–80% range. Up-and-over doors at double width need retractable gear (canopy gear cannot span a double opening reliably) and a stiffer panel to resist wind loading over the greater span, which can push them toward the upper end.
Retractable gear is not optional on a double
Canopy gear tops out at roughly 2438mm wide, well short of a typical double garage opening, so a genuine double-width up-and-over door in the UK is fitted with retractable gear as standard — springs run down both sides of the frame rather than across the head. This is not a premium upgrade on a double door; it is the only gear type that physically works at that width.
Getting an accurate double-door quote
Because the uplift varies by door type, gear and opening width, a written survey quote for your actual opening is the only reliable way to get a firm double-door price. Use the figures on this page to sanity-check a quote you have already received, not as a substitute for one — if a double sectional door is quoted well outside roughly £3,500–£6,300 inc. VAT with no stated reason, ask what is different about your opening.
| Configuration | Basis | Estimated range |
|---|---|---|
| One double sectional door, electric | £2,495–£3,500 single ×1.4–1.8 | £3,493–£6,300 |
| One double up-and-over, electric (retractable gear only) | £1,500–£2,500 single ×1.4–1.8 | £2,100–£4,500 |
| Two single up-and-over doors, manual | 2 × £995–£1,900 | £1,700–£3,800 |
Figures are derived from the single-door reference prices using the 40–80% double-door uplift stated in our reference cost data, and are estimates rather than a fixed reference price. All figures inc. VAT and standard installation. London and the South East typically add a further 15–25%.
Questions people ask
- Is a double garage door twice the price of a single?
- No — a UK double garage door typically costs 40–80% more than the equivalent single door, not double, because much of the fitting labour and some hardware costs do not scale linearly with width. An electric sectional double is therefore roughly £3,500–£6,300 inc. VAT, not £5,000–£7,000.
- Can I have two single doors instead of one double door?
- Yes, provided the opening has or can have a central structural pier between the two doors — this is common on UK double garages and often works out cheaper in total than one wide door, while letting you open only one side at a time.
- Does a double up-and-over door need retractable gear?
- Yes. Canopy gear is limited to roughly 2438mm wide, less than a typical UK double garage opening, so a genuine double-width up-and-over door is fitted with retractable gear, which runs springs down both sides of the frame rather than across the head and can span up to around 5m.
- Does a double garage door cost more to service?
- A double door typically has a stronger operator and more hardware to check than a single, so a service call may take longer, but UK annual servicing is usually still quoted per visit rather than per door leaf — expect a modest premium over the single-door £80–£150 range rather than double the cost.
