Canopy gear
Canopy gear is a UK up-and-over garage door mechanism where the springs and pivot arms sit entirely on the head of the frame above the opening, so roughly a third of the door remains outside the garage when open.
Because the springs mount only at the top of the frame, canopy gear gives poor, uneven leverage for automation and is generally limited to openings up to roughly 2438mm wide. It is the cheaper and more common gear type on manual single up-and-over doors.
UK vs US usage
US content almost never distinguishes canopy from retractable gear, instead framing everything in terms of torsion vs extension springs — a canopy/retractable split is a distinctly UK way of categorising up-and-over doors.
